When Lily says she had been reading Madame Carr’s memoir, Land of a Thousand Hills, which Carr wrote with her niece, and how much she was enjoying it, Madame Carr interrupts her. “You are the fourth person who has told me that she wrote the book. She hands Madame Carr the drawing, but she is not interested. “I’m afraid I’m on the opposite side of the fence that you are,” Madame Carr said abruptly. “If this country is going to heal, it must focus on the future, not the past.” She gets up from her chair and ushers us outside. “I think it’s more important for you to visit the children.”
